At Aqua Creative we deliver our dynamic database driven websites (like e-commerce, real estate and community websites) by making use of the award-winning, open source Joomla content management system (CMS).

So what is Joomla?

Joomla is an award-winning content management system, it’s easy to use and the system has a number of extensions and plug-ins that allow us to create virtually any type of CMS driven website that you might require. Joomla’s roots go back to 2000 and it is now the most popular open source CMS currently available. It has over 200,000 community users and contributors.

You can visit their website at www.joomla.org

What is a Content Management System?

A content management system is a piece of software that can keep track of the content on a website. It allows you, the client, the ability to update that content with no technical skill or knowledge of website coding, maintenance etc. It means you can make changes / updates to your website without having to come through a website development company such as ourselves.

The content that is updateable can range from something simple like text and photos on basic website page, all the way through to allowing a client to update and manage the stock on their online e-commerce shop.

What is Open Source?

‘Open source refers to a program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. Historically, the makers of proprietary software have generally not made source code available. Open source software is usually developed as a public collaboration and made freely available.’

What this means in the case of Joomla is the source code (the core Joomla framework) is available for any person / developer to use and modify how they see fit, either via settings in the system or via PHP (as Joomla is based on PHP and MySQL).

Many developers create open source plug-ins / extensions to expand on the basic functionality of the core system and these are either free to use or can have an associated cost. Again all the extensions / plug-ins can be modified as they are supplied as open source.

What are the advantages to using Joomla?

Since the core CMS framework is in place, and you can use pre-existing extensions / plug-ins,

it means turnaround times to created your CMS driven website are quicker than a bespoke build, which of course means less cost implications.

Since Joomla is based on PHP and MySQL and is created on an open source system anyone can use, share, and support the website. What this means is if you are unhappy with your website developer, or should you want to move to the other side of the world and use a local developer, you can, as with Joomla you are not tied into one design company as you often are with bespoke built CMS websites.

Joomla is a powerful and robust CMS which allows for a very wide variety of applications for everything from community websites, to real estate and e-commerce.

Joomla can be made SEO friendly with SEF (search engine friendly) plug-ins

You can use various plug-ins / extensions to expand on the basic Joomla functionality allowing for almost endless possibilities

There is a lot of support documentation available online and on you-tube should you want to explore the CMS capabilities yourself.

What are the disadvantages to using Joomla?

If you are looking to keep costs down and use pre-built extensions / plug-ins there is less flexibility on the functionality than a bespoke built website. (Any functionality can be achieved by creating, or changing, an extension / plug-in however an increase in cost would normally be incurred).

Since Joomla is a more powerful and robust CMS than its counterparts this does mean the learning curve on the CMS can be larger.
